What is Pilates?

Pilates is a series of unique exercises designed to increase core muscle strength, and tone and elongate the body without building bulk. The exercises move the spine and extremities in a variety of ways in order to provide improved flexibility, body symmetry , and postural alignment. In addition to providing an energizing workout, the Pilates system encourages focus and precision, engaging the mind as well as the body.

What is the difference between mat Pilates and Pilates done on equipment?

There are separate sets of movements that are done on the mat versus the equipment. Both are excellent ways to provide a full body workout. The equipment has pulleys and springs that can add resistance or provide assistance, while the mat choreography relies only one’s own inner core strength and internal efforts. Once the mat routine is learned, one can practice the exercises on his/her own whereas the equipment instruction is carried out under the instruction of a trained teacher.

Who should take Pilates?

Pilates works for all levels of fitness - whether one is deconditioned, recovering from an injury, wants to increase strength and endurance to perform better in a sport, or simply wants a challenging workout. A Pilates workout is tailored specifically to each client’s needs and fitness level.
